How to Care for Your Custom Cosplay Wig

When you invest in a custom cosplay wig, you’re not just buying a wig — you’re investing in hours of styling, structure, fibre manipulation, and detail work.

So let’s talk about how to keep it looking exactly how it left my studio.

Because incorrect storage alone has sent many wigs into early retirement.

1. Storage Is Everything

If you take one thing from this post — let it be this.

Most restyles I do are because a wig has been:

  • Thrown into a bag

  • Crushed under costumes

  • Left in humid spaces

  • Stored without structure

The correct way to store your wig:

  • On a wig head whenever possible

  • In a cool, dry space

  • Lightly covered with a hair net to reduce flyaways

  • Long wigs gently secured to prevent tangling

  • Structured styles (spikes, braids, volume work) need support. Treat them like part of your costume armour — not everyday hair.

2. Brushing (Or Not Brushing)

Not every wig should be brushed.

For natural or semi-realistic styles:

  • Use a wide tooth comb

  • Start at the ends and work upward

  • Be gentle near lace fronts and customised hairlines

For spiked or animated styles:

  • Do not brush through structured sections

  • Use your fingers to adjust fibres

  • Minor reshaping can be done with controlled heat (if heat-safe)

If you brush through spikes… we will both be upset.

3. Heat & Fibre Care

I manipulate fibres carefully during styling — especially with budget wigs that need extra refinement.

That means:

  • Always check if your wig is heat safe

  • Keep temperatures low

  • Avoid repeatedly reheating the same area

  • Steam is safer than direct flat iron pressure for reshaping

Overheating fibres shortens the life of the wig. Once fibres burn out, they cannot be restored.

4. Washing Your Wig

Styled cosplay wigs should not be washed . Ever.

if they begin to smell after repeated wear and tear mix up a concauction of 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water and spray along the inside of the wig this will kill any bacteria creating the smell !

5. Travel & Convention Prep

Transport is where most damage happens.

For conventions:

  • Secure the wig to a foam head

  • Place inside a sturdy box

  • Pad around spikes or braids

  • Wrap long lengths carefully

Bring an emergency kit:

  • Small hairspray

  • Bobby pins

  • Mini comb

  • Glue (if applicable for lace)

Prepared cosplayers are calm cosplayers.

6. Wigs With Added Detail

If your wig includes:

  • Extensions

  • Extra-long braids

  • Airbrushed shading

  • Structured spikes

  • Heavy fibre manipulation

It needs extra care.

Avoid:

  • Excess moisture

  • Friction

  • Rough brushing

  • Throwing it into storage without structure

These wigs are built with intention. Handle them like crafted costume pieces.

Final Thoughts

Your custom wig was made specifically for you — your character, your proportions, your styling preferences.

If you’re ever unsure about maintenance, reach out. I would always rather guide you properly than restyle something that could have been prevented.

Take care of your wigs, and they’ll take care of your cosplay.
