Cosplay is more than just dressing up; it’s about embodying a character you love. One of the most crucial elements of any cosplay is the wig. A well-crafted wig can transform your look and help you fully immerse yourself in your character. However, commissioning a custom cosplay wig can be a daunting task. With so many options and details to consider, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! This guide will provide you with top tips to make the process smoother and more enjoyable.
Understand Your Character
Before you even think about wigs, take some time to research your character.
Look for Reference Images: Gather images from different angles. This will help you understand the colour, style, and length of the hair.
Consider the Character’s Personality: Is your character bold and adventurous, or calm and collected? This can influence the wig style you choose.
Check for Variations: Some characters have different looks in various adaptations. Make sure you choose the version you want to portray.
Understanding your character will give you a solid foundation for your wig design.
Choose the Right Base Wig
When commissioning a custom wig, the base is all about personal preference and budget.
I often work with Map of Beauty as my main wig supplier; however, on request, I will work with Coscraft or other suppliers for longer, more specific styles and a range of colours.
Discuss Customisation Options
Customisation is one of the best parts of commissioning a wig.
Colour: Make sure to discuss the exact shade you want. Colours can look different in various lighting, so be specific.
Style: Decide the style of the wig. Do you want it animated and structured or wispy and natural? Glued hairline or lacefront?
Accessories: Some characters have unique hair accessories. Discuss this when requesting a quote.
The more details you provide, the better I can meet your expectations.
Set a Realistic Timeline
Creating a custom wig takes time.
Discuss Timeframes: When you place your order, ask how long it will take. Custom wigs can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
Plan Ahead: If you have a convention or event coming up, make sure to order your wig well in advance.
Be Flexible: Sometimes delays happen. Be prepared for the possibility that your wig may take longer than expected.
Setting a realistic timeline will help you avoid last-minute stress.
Budget Wisely
Custom wigs can vary greatly in price.
Know Your Budget: Before you start looking, decide how much you are willing to spend.
Consider Additional Costs: Don’t forget to factor in shipping, styling, and any accessories you may want.
Quality vs. Cost: While it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that quality often comes at a price.
Investing in a good wig can make a significant difference in your overall cosplay experience.
Care for Your Custom Wig
Once you have your custom wig, proper care is essential.
Washing: most of my wigs should not need to be washed; however, a damp cloth can be used to remove dirt, and a mixture of vodka and water may be sprayed inside to disinfect or kill any odour on the wig after repeated wearing
Storage: Store your wig on a wig stand or in a box to maintain its shape. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight.
Styling: any restyling techniques if a wig has been improperly cared for, or if natural wear and tear happens, advice can be given one-on-one, depending on each unique wig
Taking care of your wig will ensure it lasts for many cosplays to come.
Embrace Your Cosplay Journey
Commissioning a custom cosplay wig can be a rewarding experience.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your wig not only looks fantastic but also helps you embody your character fully. Remember to take your time, communicate clearly with your wig maker, and enjoy the process.
With the right wig, you will be ready to step into the shoes of your favourite character and make unforgettable memories. Happy cosplaying!
